The CMESS Career Advancement Initiative Committee (CAIC) complements existing women's advancement programs at the University of Vienna, such as doc.muv, postdoc.muv, habilitation or professional training, or the Franziska Seidl funding program (former Marie Jahoda Scholarship). The goal of this initiative is to serve everyone with a marginalized gender identity, such as cis women, trans women, non-binary people, trans men, agender people, and those who express themselves in gender non-conforming ways with their future career aspirations, with particular emphasis on career development and structural improvement to address systemic barriers in academia and to reconcile family and career.
The currently available programs are focused on structural improvements to reconcile family and career:
Pregnancy / Families with children of preschool agex
The aim of the program is to expand the family-friendly atmosphere at CMESS to positively influence the compatibility of career and family. See also:
(1) Childcare
Target Group: All parents (including cis-males) at CMESS with young children (preschool age children)
Goal: Structural improvement to reconcile family and career
CMESS Contribution:
- Support for on-site childcare at CMESS events, depending on need, all day or afternoon/evening (after kindergarten/school), so that parents can attend academic events and networking events in the evening, for example.
- If necessary, support for childcare at home for important evening events.
- Support attendance at conferences or other meetings, especially in relation to childcare.

(2) Support for laboratory activities during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
(for work that is no longer possible to do oneself according to employee protection rules)
Target Group: All individuals who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding
Goal: Facilitating the completion of work during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
CMESS Contribution:
- According to employee protection regulations, pregnant PhDs, PostDoctoral Researchers/ /Staff Scientists/Tenure Track Professors can no longer carry out a large number of tasks during pregnancy. They should receive fast, unbureaucratic help to continue their laboratory work, for example, having their work taken over by study assistants or TAs.
- Creation and equipment of family and breastfeeding rooms, if not currently available.
- When possible, help in setting up and equipping laboratories or laboratory workplaces that enable pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to work independently in the laboratory (for as long as possible).
