Moodle 5.0 brings numerous improvements and new features that are primarily aimed at greater control, less complexity, and an improved user experience. The most important new features include:

  • New activity overview
At the top of your course's main page, you will now find an additional tab labeled "Activities". Here, the activities in your course are grouped by activity type (e.g., assignments, quizzes, etc.), and you and your participants can also access the relevant activities from here. This can make navigation much easier, especially in large courses.
  • Shared question banks including filters
The question banks now offer significantly expanded filter and search options, e.g., by question content, author, and tags. In addition, questions can be shared more easily between courses and enriched with additional metadata. This facilitates structured exam planning and promotes collaboration. For details, see Fragensammlungen (German).
  • New assignment settings
When it comes to assignments, teachers benefit from new feedback templates and improved progress indicators, which make the grading process more transparent and efficient. In addition, filter functions make it easier to keep track of pending, submitted, and already graded assignments.
  • Improvements to the quiz activity
New status indicators for attempts have been introduced in the quiz activity, which differentiate between "submitted", "overdue", or "in progress", among other things. The navigation for participants has been revised and is now clearer, especially for longer quizzes. In a quiz, selected questions can now be re-evaluated instead of the entire quiz. Technical improvements also ensure more stable performance, for example, in the event of an unstable internet connection.
  • New offline quiz features
It is now possible to fill out answer sheets in advance with first name, last name, and student ID number. If corrections to the sheets are necessary during evaluation, additional information can now be viewed to facilitate the process.

  • New features for the TinyMCE editor
To further optimize accessibility, image descriptions of up to 750 characters are now possible. This allows a better and more comprehensive alternative description of an image. Various design templates (such as "boxes" and "labels") can now also be easily applied to text, and direct screen captures can be taken.

Details and information about further changes can be found on our Moodle preview instance in the course "Moodle Feedback, Ein- & Ausblicke" (German). In this course, you can also leave us (anonymous) feedback about Moodle, which we will use for the further development of the learning platform.
