Managed Devices (MDs) are computers or workstations where only a small selection of software will be used.
Changes to the configuration are not planned here, which is why these MDs are mainly intended for administration.
No individual, independent installation of software is possible on these computers, the users have no administrative rights.
Updates and data encryption are handled by the ZID if the device is restarted regularly.

However, please note: locally stored files are not backed up automatically!

If you opt for an MD, you will receive a device that is already equipped with the requested software.
The following steps usually need to be completed during initial setup:

  3. Plan your backup strategy: for instance use the “3-2-1 rule
    Create 3 copies of your data (1 primary copy and 2 backups)
    Store your copies in at least 2 types of storage media (local drive, network share, etc.)
    Store 1 of these copies offsite.
    Our recommendation: avoid storing data locally wherever possible and use online storage space provided by the university.

    If you need additional software please use the Self-service portal to rent software: https://zid.univie.ac.at/en/software-for-employees/
    From the catalog only packages labeled starting with “m:” are usable for your MD.
    Please ask the leader of your working group for permission before you place an order!
    After you received a message by e-mail confirming your order was processed successfully your software is ready and prepared.
    To trigger the installation, please double click the icon “Install on shutdown” on your desktop. the device will now download and install the software and until the process is completed
