1. Home Use License
The "Home Use License" can only be configured by your department tech support. This license is only for computers that cannot be connected to the Faculty's LAN in the future.
2. Network License
The "Network License" is available to all computers that are permanently, or at minimum irregularly, connected to the Faculty LAN - that is via CABLE / WIFI is not supported.
After Origin is installed on your computer, you or your IT support can setup the connection to the license server. After this is done, ORIGIN can be used as long as the machine is connected to the Faculty LAN.
If ORIGIN is used on a mobile device, the Network License can be BORROWED, so the software can then be used semi autonomously without a steady LAN connection. The maximum amount of days to borrow the software is 363 days, this time span can be cut short by possible annual license requirements, most likely in the spring.
If your borrowed license is nearing its ending date, ORIGIN should inform you of this. To remedy the situation you only have to go through the process of borrowing the software again via LAN.
Q: "Can I use ORIGIN, or borrow the license, while being connected to another faculty's LAN?
A: Only if your computer is configured by the local IT support to work in this network.
HOW TO connect to the license server using a network license:
1. Get the Origin setup file from your IT manager
2. Start setup program
3. You will be asked for the serial number: Get the number from your IT support.
4. Select 32bit or 64bit (or both) versions, the language (German/English) can be switched directly in the program in the “Hilfe”/”Help” menu.
5. Origin needs to be started with administrator rights to enter the license information data. At this point make sure that your computer is connected to the LAN inside the Faculty (but not WLAN or u:connect-wired!).
6. Add the server information:

Press “Update” and you should receive a confirmation message within several seconds.
7. Close the program and start it once again as a regular user. You might want to register with OriginLab to be eligible for support, updates, and news, but this is not mandatory.
8. When your computer stays permanently connected to the LAN you are done. Please be aware that for every start of the software, a connection to the license server from within the faculty’s LAN is required.
8. If you intend to use Origin off-line you should borrow a license right now:
Go to “Hilfe/Help” -> “Über Origin/About Origin” -> “Lizenz/License” -> “Leihen/Borrow”
Select a suitable borrowing time (up to one year is acceptable). Be sure to un-tick the option “Return license on connection …”.
From now on you can start Origin without internet connection. You can renew the borrowing procedure anytime you are connected to the physics LAN.
