Description: In its latest ‘Climate Roadmap’ (which is unfortunately so brand new that there is no English translation yet), the City of Vienna for the first time incorporates the ‘Circular City Wien’ as an overarching concept in its climate and sustainability policy. It explains how Vienna understands the circular city (p. 84), which 10 key principles it includes (p. 84), which long-term goals and priority measures the city is pursuing (p. 84) and also touches upon the ‘doughnut economics’ (p. 83).  As we will explore and discuss challenges and future visions for Vienna’s circular built environment with urban practitioners during the Spring School, this document provides some valuable insights into the City of Vienna’s approach to the circular city in preparation for our discussions.

Literature

Government of Amsterdam. (2020). Amsterdam Circular 2020-2025 Strategy. https://www.amsterdam.nl/en/policy/sustainability/circular-economy/

Description: Amsterdam’s Circular Strategy provides interesting insights into how the Global, and EU level goals are being implemented on the municipal scale. As Amsterdam is a longstanding contributor to circular initiatives, and has chosen Kate Raworth’s Doughnut model as a guiding framework, the city is a prime example to explore the ways theory and concepts begin to come into fruition. Moreover, this will compliment the other readings which also highlight district level circular initiatives in Amsterdam (see Cuomo et al. 2020), illuminate another scale, and further exemplify practical approaches to urban circularity.
