The MooDuell Activity on Moodle
What settings options do I have for the MooDuell activity in my course?
In addition to the title, the following settings can be made:
- Which questions are played?
- Are clear names or aliases used?
- Uniform way of playing with one and more correct answers
- Are students allowed to see the correct answers?
- Countdown
- How long should the correct answer be displayed?
How can I edit the name and description of a MooDuell game?
You can edit the name and description of the MooDuell activity by clicking "Edit Settings" on the course page. Here you can update the General Information, MooDuell Settings, Common Module Settings, Access Restriction, and Activity Completion.
How can I add (other) questions to a MooDuell game?
Using the activity settings in the "MooDuell Settings" section, existing questions from the Moodle question collection can be added to a MooDuell game via the respective question categories. To offer a game correctly, at least 9 playable questions must be added in one or more categories.
Can I add questions to current question category?
Yes, you click on the "Questions" tab in the MooDuell activity. At the top you will find the link "Add questions to category". Here you can now add questions.
Is it possible to display six questions from one category and three questions from another category?
Yes. Next to each question category in the "MooDuell Settings" there is a field for weighting. For example, if two categories are selected, half of the questions from each category are randomly drawn, and the weighting is set to 100 by default. If the weighting is now set to 33 for one category, but 66 for the other, one third of the questions will be drawn from the first category and two thirds from the second. If odd numbers are divided, chance decides from which category the missing question(s) will be drawn. The total weighting does not have to add up to 100, it is only the ratio between the weightings that decides (two categories with 33 equals exactly two categories with 100).
How do I add a picture to a question so that it will be displayed in MooDuell?
Add the image to the question text as usual using the editor. If multiple images are added, only the first one will be displayed. Make sure that the image is not too large, 1024 x 768 jpg is sufficient in most cases.
Where can I switch between plain names and aliases for the players?
In the activity settings in the "MooDuell Settings" section, you can check the "Use whole names" checkbox. If it is set, the plain names of the Moodle users will be used, otherwise students have to set a "MooDuell Alias" before the game.
When does the "Continue" button appear in MooDuell?
If there is only one correct answer to a question, the question can be played by clicking on one of the answer options. However, if there are several correct answers, an entry must first be confirmed by clicking an extra button. You can use the activity settings in the "MooDuell Settings" section to force a uniform way of playing by checking the "Show Continue Button" box. The confirmation button will then be displayed even for questions with only one answer. In addition to the benefit of uniform play, this makes the game more difficult for the players* because they don't know how many answers are actually correct.
Do students see the correct answers?
It depends on your settings. You can check the "Show correct answers" box in the activity settings in the "MooDuell Settings" section. Without this checkmark, students will only see if the answer they gave is correct or incorrect. If the checkmark is set, the answers that would have been correct will also be displayed.
Can I change the countdown time for each question?
Yes, you can change the countdown time for each game using the activity settings in the "MooDuell Settings" section. You can also offer a game with no countdown at all, in which case students will have as much time as they want to answer the questions.
How long should the correct answer be displayed?
After playing a question, the players receive feedback as to whether their answer was correct or, depending on the setting, which answer would have been correct. You can define how long this display is visible. Either as long as you want and the players simply click to move on to the next question. Or there is also a countdown, which makes the game faster and more difficult. You can set a value for "Time to see correct answers" in the activity settings in the "MooDuell settings" section.
How can I add students to the MooDuell game?
You can add students to the MooDuell game by adding more students to the course with the respective MooDuell activity.
Can I export the data of open/finished games and high scores?
Yes, you can export all data of open as well as finished games and high scores.

- Select "Open games/Finished games/Highscores".
- Select the format for export (e.g. csv, xlsx, pdf).
