  • Messages: Moodle messages. communication with others
  • Settings: area for making personal settings for Moodle and editing your own profile
  • For students: link list to guides, support pages and other services of the University of Vienna relevant for students
  • For employees: link list to guides, support pages and other pages of the University of Vienna relevant for teachers and their employees

You can always go back to the Home page from anywhere in Moodle using the top navigation bar.

Dashboard

The Dashboard is your personal entry page in Moodle. Here you can choose from different blocks that you can add and arrange individually.

Accessing the Dashboard

You can access the Dashboard by either clicking on the Dashboard section on the Home page, or by selecting Dashboard from the header bar from any location in Moodle.

Configure the Dashboard

On your Dashboard you will find some preset blocks. However, you can delete them, rearrange them and/or add other blocks if needed. To be able to edit your Dashboard, you first have to activate the edit mode using the Edit mode switch the upper right corner. Add the desired block to the Dashboard by simply clicking on it. Blocks are inserted at the bottom of the selected column.

For an overview of the blocks, see Blöcke (German) in this wiki. Note that not all blocks can also be added on the Dashboard and some blocks only work in courses but not on the Dashboard.

Blocks that you embed on the Dashboard, unlike blocks in the course, will not be seen by other users! You only design your personal start page here!

By means of the move symbols you can move blocks between columns and within a column. Simply drag it to the desired position with the left mouse button pressed.

Using the actions menu (gear icon), you can access a menu that allows you to set the position of the block and, for some blocks, to make block-specific settings (configure), as well as the delete function. Deleted blocks are removed from the Dashboard and added back to the block selection.

If you are not satisfied with the changes you have made, you can reset them in edit mode using the Reset page to defaule button.

Courses

Under Courses you will find your Course overview. Here, all courses are listed in which you are enrolled in any role and which are also visible to you.

Access Course overview

You can access your Course overview either by clicking on the Courses block on the home page or - from any position in Moodle - by clicking on My courses in the header and then All my courses in the drop-down menu.

Course overview - filter functions

Filter by semesters

At the top left of the Course overview, you can filter the courses by semester. If you select a semester, only the courses belonging to that semester will be listed. If you have starred courses, the option Starred will also be listed. Courses that you have removed from your overview can be found under Removed from view.

A semester is only displayed if you are enrolled in at least one course of the semester that is switched visible for you.

Which semester a course is assigned to is determined by the course start date. If you always want to display a course in the current semester in the Course overview, you can adjust the course settings accordingly (e.g. March 1 for the SS and October 1 for the WS).

Search function

Furthermore, a search field is available at the top of the Course overview, which you can use to search for courses.

If you use the search function, only the courses belonging to the item selected in the semester filter on the left will be searched. If you want to search all (not hidden) courses, you have to change the display to All (except removed from view).

Course overview display

In the upper right corner of the Course overview you can change the display of your course list.

Star courses

You can star courses you frequently use. To do this, select the option Star this course from the course's actions menu (three dots) in the Course overview.

As soon as at least one course is starred, in the semester filter of the Course overview appears the option Starred. In addition, you will find a star icon in the upper right corner of the Moodle header, which you can also use to access your favorite courses. Furthermore, there is a block called Starred courses that you can include in your dashboard, where you can also access the starred courses.

You can also remove courses from the starred courses. To do this, select Unstar this course from the course*s actions menu (three dots) in the course overview.

Remove courses from view

If you no longer need courses, you can hide them in your Course overview. To do this, click on the course's action menu (three dots) and then select Remove from view from the menu.

Attention

This will not hide the course for the students! If you want a course to be invisible for the students, you can define this in the course settings under Course visibility.

Under the menu item Removed from view in the semester filter all courses that you have hidden from your Course overview are listed . You can make a course visible again in the Course overview at any time by selecting Restore to view from the actions menu (three dots) of the relevant course.

Help

We have compiled a list of helpful links to instructions, support pages and some relevant services of the University of Vienna for faculty as well as for students. You can access them in Moodle via the For employees and For Students boxes on your Moodle Home page, or from any position in Moodle via Help in the top menu bar.
