Valid from Moodle version 4.2

The File material allows you to make individual files of any file format available in your Moodle course.

To include a file in your course, first follow the procedure described in "Add activities and resourcees in Moodle".

Contents

Specific settings for files

You can make the following settings for the File resource:

Name

Under Name you enter the name for the file under which it should be displayed in the course. The name does not have to be the same as the name under which the file is saved.

Choose a descriptive name so that students can see at a glance what the file is about.

Description

When you enter a description for your file, you must either check Display description on course page or include the Activities block in your course, otherwise the description will not be seen by the students.

Select files (=upload file)

Under Select files you can upload the file. There are two ways to do this:

  • Option 1: Drag the file from your computer to the file insert field with the left mouse button pressed.

  • Option 2: Click the Add icon in the upper left corner above the file insert field.

Then click Upload a file in the left column and use Durchsuchen to select the file from your computer. Finally, click the Upload this file button at the bottom.

You can upload more than one file in the Select files field, but only one file will be displayed for students, and it will be the one defined as the main file.

Moodle allows you to upload a wide variety of file types. However, you should inform your students if special programs are needed to open a file.

Appearance

In the Appearance section, you can specify where the file is opened if it is a file type that can be opened in the browser, and what additional information (file size, file type, and upload date) should be displayed. The additional information is displayed next to the file name on the main page of the course if you tick the Display resource description option in the appearance settings.

Edit and delete files

Edit file

After you have included a file in the course, you can open and edit the settings form again at any time.

  1. To do this, first activate edit mode via the Edit mode switch in the top right corner of Moodle.
  2. Then select Edit settings from the file's edit menu (three dots).

Delete file

If you want to delete a file completely from the course, proceed as follows:

  1. Activate edit mode using the Edit mode switch in the upper right corner of Moodle.
  2. Select Delete from the file's edit menu (three dots).

Deleted elements will remain in the course's Recycle bin for 7 days and can be reactivated from there if necessary. The Recycle bin can be found in the upper tab of the course under More.

If you want to delete a file and replace it with another one, but do not want to change the settings, proceed as follows:

  1. Access the file's settings form as described above.
  2. Click on the file in the Select file area.
  3. A window will open where you will find, among others, the Delete button at the top.

  4. Afterwards you still have to confirm the deletion process via OK button.
  5. You can now upload a new file.
