The University of Vienna provides Moodle as a central learning platform to support teaching. Here, closed virtual areas can be created for the individual courses, which are called courses in Moodle. In the courses, work documents can be made available for the participants of the course, communication possibilities such as forums can be created and various activities such as assignments or tests can be provided. The use of Moodle is voluntary for the teachers.

The University of Vienna's Moodle platform for teaching can be accessed at moodle.univie.ac.at

Furthermore, the ZID operates a Moodle training platform.  All persons with a valid u:account (staff, teachers, but also students) can create a new test course once per semester and try out the functionalities of Moodle. You can access the training platform at moodleschulung.univie.ac.at.

Crate a Moodle course via u:space

To create a Moodle course for a course, select Courses from the Teaching drop-down menu in u:space at the top of the navigation bar, and then click the M icon by the desired course.

Click the Create course in learning platform button. A Moodle course is automatically activated.

By default, your Moodle course is still hidden from students. If you want the course to be visible right away, check Make course visible in Moodle.

Access and update Moodle cours via u:space

If a Moodle course already exists for a course, you can access your Moodle course directly from u:space via the Open course in Moodle link.

If necessary, you can manually initiate a synchronization between u:space and Moodle via the Update learning platform button. In doing so, you have three areas that can be synchronized and you can check them off:

  • Update title: In rare cases, it happens that the course title changes after the Moodle course has already been created. The title will not be synced automatically.
  • Update lecturers: Teachers, tutors, and "Sachbearbeiter*innen" - unlike students - are only registered in Moodle when a course is created and are not automatically matched afterwards. If additional colleagues are added later or if they activate the u:account later, you have to update u:space or manually enroll the colleagues in the Moodle course.
  • Update students: Student registrations and deregistrations should be synchronized automatically. However, you can also start the synchronization manually if, for example, you notice that the number of students in the Moodle course does not match the number of registrations in u:space.

Make course visible in Moodle

By default, Moodle courses are created hidden for students. In this case, a corresponding note appears at the top of the course. The visibility can be changed in the course settings. If you click on course settings in the note text, you will be taken directly to the Settings tab.

In the General section you will find the setting options for the Course visibility. Here, select Show from the drop-down menu and then save the change using the Save changes button at the very bottom.
