About the Universities IT services

IT services for theFaculty for Chemistry at the University of Vienna are provided threefold: Via the ZID (Central Informatics Services), the Faculty IT Support and the Department IT Support. 

The ZID is the umbrella organisation for every IT service at the University. The Faculty Tech Support is the umbrella organisation for the IT services of the faculty. The Department IT Support is the base layer, salt of the earth, down and dirty, direct IT support for the members of the respective departments. In a perfect world, a University member first reads up on the question, then creates a Service-Desk ticket if possible, or calls the Help-Desk, THEN contacts the departments IT representative, and only writes an E-Mail to the faculties IT support if the department tech suppor is unavailable. This tier system is necessary for the support to funcion properly.

If you need help, and /or problems arise, there is a preferred and ordered way to go about it:

Take to a device with Internet access and inform yourself first. Use the ZID homepage (zid.univie.ac.at), the Wiki (wiki.univie.ac.at) or the faculty homepage (chemie.univie.ac.at). You could also pester colleagues or the nice people in the departments administration. There is a good possibility to find the information you need there. If your problem is covered by the ZID's Service-Desk, please open a ticket there. To do this you need an uaccount no less.

Department IT support

No luck scouring the Interwebs for help? The first line of defense in IT matters are the department IT support persons. You can look these shy deer up via this Wiki, the faculties home page or via u:find. Please always contact these department representatives first.

ChemIT / IT support of the Faculty for Chemistry

If your IT representatives are in hiding and /or otherwise unavailable, contact the faculty IT support. The preferred method is as of now via E-Mail. Please only call by phone in emergency situations, thank you!

NEWS, problems & solutions:

Molecular Weight Calculator

There must have been some unknown changes in the Windows 10 managed system.

Suddenly it does not work anymore and you get an error message.

You find the fix and more information here in the Wiki under "\Software\MolecularWeigthCalculator"

Problems while installing software on unmanaged Systems (NON Microsoft secure installer)

This concerns: Managed Windows 10 installations. 

There seems to be new Group Policy settings, which cause problems while installing some applications, drivers, etc.

Group Policy settings are a diverse range of Windows settings on managed PCs. These configurations are set by the ZID and cannot be changed by local administrators.

It seems that installers are not allowed anymore to write into the "System32" folder. 

The problem popped up when installing:

TopSpin

DeLock drivers via installer

EDUROAM: WiFi connection cannot be established via a Windows computer

Why is this happening?

Windows updates did it.

Will the ZID not do something?

Some day it will magically work again, no notice given.

What can be done?

You have to configure the connection manually. We will post the necessary steps here, in the meantime please contact Harald Fuchs for the solution.

What does the ZID say to the matter?

The official comment is, to wait it out until Microsoft pushes new updates to solve the problem.

Is there no other solution?

All solutions that could be found do not work, at least not at managed PCs.

Android Smartphone cannot connect to EDUROAM WiFi when trying to connect for the first time

Why?

Most likely you are trying to connect to EDUROAM at a physical point at the faculty where two or more hotspots are crossing over.

Android does not like that very much.

A good spot to connect to Eduroam is the main staircase in Währingerstraße 42.

You really just have to try out a few places.

Sometimes the same problem is happening on notebooks too.
