INDISCHER TANZ

Tradition Trails
Kathak and Odissi with Aboli Dhayarkar and Janhavi Dhamankar.

As exponents of 2 different Indian classical dance styles, we come together to offer an introduction into the histories, techniques and versatilities of both dance traditions. While kathak offers an ethos from the Mughal period, Odissi offers a glimpse into the temple sculptures in India.
Odissi is one of the 8 classical, highly codified dance styles in India. This temple tradition from the eastern state of Orissa, has undergone a few revivals and offers a rich, holistic embodied experience which enhances mindfulness, correct alignment of the body, nuanced movements of the eyes, head, neck, torso, wrists and legs.
Aboli’s specialisation, Kathak, is a north Indian dance form which emphasises on rhythmic footwork, body movements, speedy spinning techniques with command on the aspect of storytelling through expressions & hand gestures.
Janhavi has been trained in Odissi for over 20 years. She conducts specialised workshops along with Bollywood and folk dance and has given performances in Dubai, Europe and India. She is currently pursuing her artistic research PhD in empathy at the Kunst Uni, Graz.
Aboli, an Indian classical (Kathak) dancer with decade-long experience & a Masters Degree from Pune University with a Gold medal.
